Best DPIA Software for India
A Data Protection Impact Assessment is a decision record, not a questionnaire. Its value is that it names who assessed a risk, what they concluded and what mitigation was accepted — which is precisely what an auditor or the Data Protection Board asks about afterwards. Most software sold for this produces the questionnaire and loses the decision.
What DPIA software should produce
Judge it by the artefact, not the workflow.
- A record tied to a specific processing activity in your RoPA, not a free-standing document.
- The identified risks to data principals and the reasoning behind each rating.
- The mitigations accepted, and who accepted them, with a date.
- Version history, so you can show what was known when the decision was made.
- A trigger to reassess when the underlying processing changes.
What it cannot do
Software cannot decide whether processing is proportionate, whether a lawful basis holds, or whether residual risk is acceptable. Those are judgements belonging to named people in your organisation. A tool that scores a DPIA automatically and returns a verdict is describing something it is not entitled to conclude.

Who needs one
DPIAs are among the additional obligations attaching to Significant Data Fiduciaries. Organisations outside that classification may still run them for high-risk processing, and doing so is good practice — but the first question is whether you have determined and recorded your status at all.

What is the difference between a DPIA and a PIA?
They are closely related. In Indian practice DPIA refers to the assessment contemplated by the DPDP Act for Significant Data Fiduciaries, while PIA is the older general term for a privacy impact assessment. The substance — identifying risks to individuals and the measures managing them — is the same.
Can DPIA software make the assessment for us?
No. It can structure the assessment, connect it to the processing activity and preserve the decision with its reasoning. Whether processing is proportionate and whether residual risk is acceptable are judgements your organisation must make and own.
